Sexual assault, often known as physical or psychological violence, is a reality in the sports world that has gained awareness in France and around the world because to high-level athletes’ testimonies and extensive media investigations. According to a recent study on interpersonal violence, approximately 14% of the adults interviewed reported experiencing sexual violence before the age of 18 while participating in sports; cases of all forms of violence are close to 30% among those who are members of ethnic or LGBT minorities, have a disability, or are international practitioners.
These acts of violence are sometimes the result of a power and control dynamic between coaches and athletes or sportsmen that exists inside a systemic business setting.
This book offers a multidisciplinary, unique approach to sexual and gender-based violence in sports by incorporating existing data on other forms of violence and other fields. The elements discussed enable the reader to increase the effectiveness of their actions through a better understanding of the issues and logic behind these violent crimes, the creation of coordinated action plans, a structure for listening and accompanying, the organization of prevention and training for all participants and actors in sport and its ecosystem. The article is divided into three sections:
• definitions and mechanisms; • reception, hearing, and signaling; • prevention and formation.
The work, which was coordinated by Olivier Coste and Philippe Liotard, brings together a number of violence experts. It addresses health professionals (physicians, kinetherapists, dietitians, psychologists, etc.), athletes and sportsmen (teachers, coaches, physical and mental trainers, club executives, etc.), as well as athletes and sportsmen and their parents. It also targets everyone who is interested in sexual abuse and maltreatment and who feels depressed about this difficult-to-talk-about issue.
Olivier Coste is a sports physician and university doctor in health biology. He is also a doctor inspector in the public health department and a doctor consultant for the DRAJES Occitanie in Montpellier.
Sociologist, anthropologist, and sports historian Philipe Liotard works at the University Claude Bernard Lyon 1’s Laboratory on Vulnerabilities et Innovation dans le Sport (L-VIS).
