Atlas of Office-based Laryngeal Steroid Injection

by Abdul Latif Hamdan

With the shift in laryngology toward office-based surgery, many laryngeal procedures are now performed in the clinic, sparing patients the need for general anesthesia and reducing the morbidity associated with direct laryngoscopy. Among these minimally invasive interventions is steroid injection, used in patients with a wide range of voice disorders. Numerous reports show that intralesional steroid injection can lead to complete or partial regression of vocal fold nodules, polyps, Reinke’s edema, cysts, and other benign lesions.

It is also used to treat vocal fold scarring by improving vibratory pliability and function, and it plays an important role in managing laryngo-tracheal stenosis by enhancing airway function and prolonging surgery-free intervals. In addition, office-based steroid injection is an effective adjunct to other in-office laryngeal procedures, such as laser therapy.

Atlas of Office-based Laryngeal Steroid Injection provides an overview of the use of in-office steroid injections for benign vocal fold lesions, vocal fold scarring, subglottic stenosis, and numerous laryngeal inflammatory conditions arising from systemic disease. The reader is guided through nearly 150 images and 12 video recordings of real surgical cases performed in-office using various injection approaches. The atlas compiles pre-, intra-, and postoperative endoscopic images illustrating patient outcomes following steroid injection therapy. This resource is ideal for otolaryngologists, laryngologists, fellows, residents, speech-language pathologists, phoniatrists, and voice therapists.
